Gezhouba Dam

2003-12-08

The Gezhouba Water Conservancy Hub is located on the end section of the Yangtze River Three Gorges in Yichang City, Hubei Province, China, 2.3 kilometers downstream of the outlet of the Yangtze River Three Gorges, Nanjinguan. It is the first large-scale hydropower station on the Yangtze River and also the world's largest low head, high flow, and runoff hydropower station. The dam type is a gate dam, with a maximum height of 47 meters and a total storage capacity of 1.58 billion cubic meters. The total installed capacity is 2.715 million kilowatts, of which two 170000 kilowatt units and five 125000 kilowatt units are installed at the Erjiang Hydropower Station; The Dajiang Hydropower Station has installed 14 125000 kilowatt units. The average annual power generation is 14 billion kilowatt hours.

The Gezhouba project has comprehensive benefits such as power generation and improving navigation channels. The installed capacity of the power station is 2.715 million kilowatts, with a guaranteed output of 768000 kilowatts when operated alone, and an annual power generation of 15.7 billion kilowatt hours (after the completion of the Three Gorges Project, the guaranteed output can be increased to 1.58 million to 1.94 million kilowatts, and the annual power generation can be increased to 16.1 billion kilowatt hours). The power station is integrated into the central China power grid with 500 kV and 220 kV transmission lines, and transmits 1.2 million kilowatts to Shanghai, which is 1000 kilometers away, through 500 kV DC transmission lines.

The backwater of the reservoir area is 110-180 kilometers, improving the navigation conditions of the Sichuan River. The total storage capacity of the reservoir is 1.58 billion cubic meters, due to shipping restrictions; In 2013, there was no flood control or peak shaving effect. After the completion of the Three Gorges Project, it can have a counter regulating effect on the uneven flow of the Three Gorges Project due to flood control, with a counter regulating storage capacity of 85 million cubic meters.
